Michael Taylor's designs are not for the fainthearted. The noted designer, whose experimental practice was informed by his native San Francisco, pioneered the ’80s style we know today as the California Look—an all-white, light-filled aesthetic full of both rusticity and glamour. Despite Taylor’s focus on subtle hues, he was also drawn to compelling combinations of mixed media and abstract shapes. These elements meet in an enduringly popular artifact of his tenure, known on Instagram as the Spiral Lamp—which Michael is often credited for popularizing.
